…PRETTY GOOD! Especially for the St Anthony area of the Northern Peninsula. The season was late coming and a little worrying for tourism operators but by late May it was in full swing.
Large bergs moved into the St Anthony, St Lunaire, Dark Tickle and Lanse aux Meadows area and stayed well into June. A few large ones moved down into White Bay and Green Bay with a couple in Twillingate but the Bonavista / Trinity Bay area and St John’s were shut out this season.
This is not uncommon. Icebergs are fickle and are drive by the winds and ocean currents. Every season is different. Sometimes the arrive and some times they don’t.
For the past couple of years I have been shooting icebergs for Reuters news agency. …follow the link for the Reuters collection. Its a big part of the ongoing environmental and weather news coverage. Not to mention it makes for spectacular photos without having to travel to Antarctica or Greenland!
Looking forward to the spring and heading up to the north coast again to see what Mother Nature sends us in the spring.
Check out my Welcome to Iceberg Alley photo gallery if you can’t just get enough.
